Common Language is a non-profit, civil society organization founded in January 2005 in Beijing. The organization is concerned about the social groups in China suffering discrimination and violence due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. Through community mobilization, public education and policy advocacy, it is dedicated to raising public awareness of gender and sexual diversity, combating discrimination, and advocating equal rights.

In 2008, Common Language received the “She Changes the World” award from Mama Cash Foundation in the Netherlands. Common Language’s core values are Equality. Diversity and Openness.

It has also helped co-organize a variety of events related to the media, such as workshops for journalists about how they should report LGBT issues; video workshops for lala activists about how they could use legacy media and social media to advance their agenda (such as the training camp teaching participants to use videos to promote gender diversity and equality). The organization has also helped organize screenings of queer films, and the China Rainbow Media Awards.

In 2013, Common Language organized a participatory workshop called “We Want to Speak Out - Video Camp for Gender Diversity and Equality” in Hangzhou in 2013. It provided a platform for participants to master video production skills and discuss issues related to the advocacy of gender diversity and equality.
