Happy Together

Happy Together was previously known as the Queer Reading Group in Zhuhai Campus, Sun Yat-sen University (SUSY). In 2006, under the aegis of Professor Ai Xiaoming and Gender and Sex Education Forum, the group was granted the status of an official association by the university and thus changed its name to Happy Together. That Happy Together was the first LGBT student association in China gaining official recognition provoked heated media discussion.

However, Happy Together aimed to promote gender diversity rather than focused only on gay issues. Because of the widespread media coverage, the group was besieged with controversy. In 2007, the university rejected its registration. From then on, Happy Together turned underground, and its activities took place in the Guangzhou Campus instead of the Zhuhai Campus.

In 2011, Rainbow Group was established by the students in the Guangzhou Campus, SUSY. Rainbow Group could be seen as a continuation of Happy Together. Rainbow Group aims to “facilitate education on gender and sexual equality and diversity on campus through theory and practice.”
