In  2013, a group of film lovers launched the Chinese Folk Women’s Film Festival, which subsequently changed its name to China Women’s Film Festival. It has then become a non-profit, civil society organization dedicated to promoting moving images by and about women in China. By presenting the art of feminist films from China and abroad, the festival encourages open dialogue on feminism in China; fosters the creation of feminist videos and films in China; enhances the public recognition of women’s creation of moving images; and increases public awareness of issues facing women and respect for women in China. The festival focuses on the use of film to express women's rights, involves the community to raise public awareness of women's rights, and enhances women's self-awareness.

2013年，一群愛電影的朋友共同發起中國民間女性影展，後更名為中國女性影展。女影作為民間非營利組織，致力於促進中國全國性女性影像推廣，通過展現國內外女性主義電影藝術，激發更多中國女性主義的討論以及中國女性主義的影像實踐，讓更多中國人能夠重視女性的影像「書寫」，加強中國社會的女性意識以及對女性的尊重。影展透過電影表達女性的權益，透過社區的參與提高大眾對女性權益的關注，及提高女性的自我意識。
